Communiqué: BankNotes

It is hereby mentioned for general information that it has come to the notice of the Bank that there is presently counterfeit banknotes of Rs100, Rs200, Rs500 and Rs1000 in circulation.

Members of the public are requested to exercise caution when handling banknotes which appear to have been counterfeited.

With the aim of improving the security of our banknotes and stay ahead of counterfeiters, the Bank of Mauritius issued upgraded banknotes of Rs200, Rs500 and Rs1000 denominations with new security features as from 14 October 2011. The Bank of Mauritius provided stakeholders and the general public with educational materials to help familiarize them with the new security features which are also published on the Bank’s website.

The security features of the banknotes in circulation are available on the Bank’s website (http://www.bom.mu) and members of the public are kindly requested to get accustomed to these security features whenever they come across doubtful banknotes.

In terms of section 42 of the Bank of Mauritius Act 2004, it is an offence, punishable by a fine not exceeding one million rupees and to penal servitude for any person who, without lawful authority or excuse has in his possession, any forged, counterfeited or altered currency note or any unfinished or incomplete currency note purporting to be issued by the Bank, knowing same to be forged, counterfeited or altered.
