The Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, Mr Rundheersing Bheenick, gave a Press Conference at the Bank of Mauritius Tower on 13 March 2013 during which he explained the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and responded to questions by the media.
Further to certain reports in the media, the Bank wishes to bring to the attention of the public the context in which the Governor talked about the independence of the MPC. While referring to the various compositions of the MPC since April 2007, the Governor stated:
‘… Le Ministre des Finances, lui, a nommé trois personnes dans la première version, quatre personnes pour la deuxième [MPC], cinq personnes pour la troisième et on revient encore une fois à la case de départ où il nomme trois personnes. Et les deux membres nommés par le Premier Ministre remplacent quelque peu si vous voulez les deux membres qui étaient nommés par le Ministre des Finances, parmi les directeurs qui siégeaient au Board de la Banque de Maurice. Dans cette version, la première version, le Comité de politique monétaire n’était pas totalement indépendant parcequ’il devait se soumettre au Board et on faisait un rapport au Board de la banque ...’
Members of the public are kindly reminded that the law was amended several times to further enhance the independence of the MPC.
