Tenth Anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius

A limited quantity silver commemorative coin of Rs25 denomination was issued in November 1978 to mark the 10th anniversary of the independence of Mauritius.

The design on the obverse of this commemorative coin depicts the effigy of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam with the inscriptions "DR THE RIGHT HONOURABLE SIR SEEWOOSAGUR RAMGOOLAM KT" and "MAURITIUS" .

This is the first Mauritius coin not to bear the head of a British King or Queen for 100 years.

The design on the reverse of the commemorative coin shows the Legislative Assembly Building in Port-Louis with the inscriptions "Tenth Anniversary of Independence" and "Twenty Five Rupees"

The coin has been struck by Royal Mint, London.

The coin is circular in shape with a diameter of 38.61mm and weighs 28.28 grams.
